Why is men's skincare so important?

All jokes aside, your skin is the largest organ in your body. But have you considered that it is also like your business card? It is, after all, the first thing people see when they meet you.

Keeping this in mind, a few minutes of skincare daily will not only have you looking and feeling healthier --  it will also boost your confidence and sense of wellbeing. As a bonus, healthier skin will improve the way others see you - and that can't be a bad thing.

More than any other part of you, your skin is exposed to the elements and affected by everything you do or put into your body. The time you spend outdoors in the sun, your diet and, god forbid, the fact that you are ageing all affect your skin.

It only stands to reason that the time to start taking care of your skin is now -- while you don’t think you need it.

What is the difference between men’s and women’s skincare?

To understand how to care for your skin correctly, you first need to understand a fundamental truth -- men and women both have different needs when it comes to daily skincare.

If you are like most guys, you believe your skin is tougher, more resilient and needs less care than a woman’s, but that is wrong - as a man, your skin needs different care, not less care.

Here are a few important differences between the sexes when it comes to skincare you may not have considered:

Men have bigger pores and oilier skin

Yeah, you heard it right -- men have more sebaceous glands, so their skin produces more oil. But that’s not the end of it. As a man, your pores are also larger, and that means more exposure to pollutants and free radicals that can accelerate ageing and skin damage.

It is easier for those damaging agents to pass through your pores into the deepest layers of your skin.

So how do you prevent it?  Exfoliating, controlling oils and protecting and hydrating your skin is the first step to maintaining a more healthy complexion. It only takes a few minutes -- think of it as taking a moment in the morning or evening to get yourself centred. There is nothing wrong with a little me time.

Men’s skin ages later, but more quickly

Next, women begin to show evidence of ageing earlier than men, but don’t get too excited, that isn't necessarily good news for you.

As a man, you may have a small advantage now, but when you finally start to show signs like lines, wrinkles, sun spots, they will likely be more pronounced and deeply formed.

To avoid the worst, you need to begin your skincare ritual early. This means providing your skin with proper hydration and nourishment to delay the onset of damage and wrinkles and keep the wolves of ageing at bay.

If you have reached the stage where ageing starts to show, don’t sweat it, with proper care, it is never too late to begin to nourish and reshape your skin.

Shaving can be both good and bad for your skin

In addition to being a bit of a chore, dragging a razor across your face every morning can harm your skin. If your skin stings a little when you finish shaving, that is because you are stripping off some of the mature layer of your skin and exposing the delicate new layer below.

That said, shaving isn't all bad. If you are shaving properly, you are naturally exfoliating rather than stripping your facial skin. Also, the movements and expressions that you make when you shave can actually help you firm and tighten your facial musculature. So go with it, have a little fun in the mirror.

The trick is to balance the benefits and downsides of shaving by putting a proper men’s skincare routine into place. Do it right, and invest in a quality shaving cream. You will notice the difference right away, and your skin will thank you. That stinging should stop as well.

Choose natural men’s skincare

When it comes to kicking off a new skincare routine, do it right. One of the best things you can do for your face is to choose a natural men’s skincare product. Avoid products with artificial scents or ingredients -- just natural skin care is what you need.

The best natural skincare products are healthier for you, invigorate your skin and boost your blood circulation. So why not pick something rich in natural vitamins, active botanical ingredients, and fatty acids over most of the stuff that lines the shelves in you local shop?  Provide your skin with optimal protection and nourishment while benefiting the world around you. It is a win-win situation.

Once you have decided to commit to your daily skincare routine, there are only three more  things you need to remember:

1. Pick the right men’s skincare products for your skin type

If you want to look your best, you need to make the right choices when it comes to your skin. This starts with understanding whether you have oily, dry, sensitive, normal or combination skin.

Whatever skin type you have been blessed (or cursed) with, bear in mind that men’s skin is thicker, so skin care products for men need to penetrate more deeply to be effective. To address this, natural skin care brands like Christian Acuña create men’s skincare products from natural ingredients that are finer on a molecular level than most products available today.

Don’t tell anyone, but if most women knew this, they would probably switch over.

If you aren’t sure about what is right for you, Christian Acuña Skincare or another qualified skincare professional can help you out.

2. Consistency is crucial to your skincare routine

Now that you have all the right stuff, consistency is key when it comes to your skincare ritual. As with most things, improvements don’t happen overnight, though you may immediately notice a difference in the way your skin feels once you have started.

Commit to it, make your skincare routine second nature, and the results will follow.

3. Use warm water, not cold for the best skincare results

Splashing cold water on your face has the same effect as jumping into an ice bath. Yeah, you know what we mean. Don’t do it.

When you use cold water, your pores contract so that you can’t clean your skin deeply or effectively. Hot water won’t do you much good either -- too hot and you could potentially damage your skin. The trick is to avoid extremes and treat your skin gently.

Wash with warm water, preferably after a shower to get the best effect. You should rinse with warm water, cleanse, then rinse with warm water again.

Once you have patted dry, you can apply the moisturiser. But don’t stop there, apply sunscreen for all-day protection.

These simple steps can help you make a big difference in the way your skin looks and feels, and they take only minutes per day.

So stop overthinking it and get started on your daily skincare ritual now. If you still aren't sure where to begin, email or give us a call at https://christianacuna.com/pages/contact . We are happy to help you.
